Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Training
We offer a variety of Driving Instructor training packages tailored to meet the needs of people new to the industry as well as those who are established and seeking to develop existing skills and abilities. We do not currently offer either a Trainee Licence or Franchise guarantee on qualification, but we do assist you in finding suitable placements as a Trainee Licence holder or newly qualified ADI.
We operate in the north west of England, but if you live outside of our normal area we can either offer a residential course in Manchester or provide you with a fee for training in your own area.
If you would like to speak to a Trainer to discuss a career as an ADI or you have any queries about the course please contact us.
Candidate Requirements:
You Must:
- Hold a full British or Northern Ireland unrestricted car driving licence.
- Have held your driving licence for a total of at least four out of the past six years prior to entering the Register after qualifying, but a foreign licence, an automatic car driving licence or a provisional licence held after passing the driving test, all count towards the four years.
- Not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four year period prior to being entered in the Register.
- Not have more than five points on your driving licence.
- Be a fit and proper person as defined by the Driving Standards Agency to have your name entered in the Register. All convictions, including motoring offences, still in force, will be taken into account when assessing your suitability to be entered in the Register.
- Be able to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5m (90’) where letters and numbers are 79.4mm (3.1/8”) tall in good daylight, with the help of glasses or contact lenses if worn.
N.B. You are eligible to apply for the first of the ADI examinations before the four year period, but must have held a full licence for four years before taking the second (Driving) examination
Suitability Assessment
Before undertaking the relevant course of instruction required to become a Driving Instructor it is important that we both have a clear knowledge that you understand and meet the requirements to follow this career path. We will come and discuss both the course and career path you are choosing and we will give you an assessment of your current driving standard.
The vast majority of Approved Driving Instructors in the UK are self-employed; in fact there are very few opportunities for "employed" status as an ADI. If this will be a life change for you, we will also discuss this during our initial meeting with you.
Suitability Assessment: £60.00
PART 1 - THEORETICAL TRAINING:
This element of Driving Instructor training is completed via distance learning. We will provide you with the DSA question bank, a set of appropriate books to support your acquisition of technical knowledge and understanding and either a DVD or Video copy of the Hazard Perception Test, whichever is best suited to your requirements.
We offer a telephone based support system should you have any queries or just need some clarification about the distance learning you are undertaking to become an Approved Driving Instructor. We will also provide you with the necessary information on how to apply for your Part 1 test.
Part 1 Home Study Package: £160.00
PART 2 – DRIVING TECHNIQUE TRAINING:
When you have passed the written examination we will schedule the practical “in car” tuition element of your Driving Instructor training. This will be undertaken over two full days and is normally done in your own vehicle, since that is the one you will be using to take the Test. The vehicle you use for the Part 2 Test must be in a roadworthy condition.
This training for the Part 2 examination will raise your own standard of driving to the advanced level you will need, both to meet the high standards demanded by the DSA Part 2 Test and maintain during your professional career as an ADI. Additionally, you will learn to analyse your own driving technique, improve your observation skills and prepare the skills and abilities you will need to utilise during your Part 3 training and future career.
Your training will involve dealing with a diverse selection of driving environments and situations from manoeuvres to motorways. You will have to demonstrate that you can make proper progress within the legal speed limits in a safe and competent manner. To give you a clear understanding of the standard you have attained, a mock test will be conducted at the end of the second day of your training.
On the second day of your training your Trainer will advise you whether or not you have reached the required standard to undertake the Part 2 Test. If the required standard has not been reached then additional training will be offered at a reduced rate.
Part 2 Training Package: £300.00 - Manchester Based
Additional Practical Training for External Candidates
We also offer additional training for Part 2 candidates who have undertaken their training to be a Driving Instructor with other organisations and are approaching their final attempt at Part 2 and feel that the training they have received so far does not meet all their requirements. It is often useful in these circumstances to experience a different style of training to enable you to address any areas of concern. Training is undertaken in 3 hour block sessions.
External Candidate Practical Training for Part 2: £35.00 per hour
PART 3 – INSTRUCTIONAL ABILITY TRAINING:
When you have passed your Part 2 Test we will send you the Part 3 Workbook and a set of Visual Aids and Prompt Cards to prepare for your first practical training session in the Instructional Ability element of the Driving Instructor training course. You will need to complete the workbook ahead of your first day of training. The Part 3 training will take 7 days and provides you with the relevant number of training hours required to apply for a Trainee Licence if this is a route you wish to pursue.
The course covers:
- Core Competencies - Fault Identification, Analysis and Remedial Action
- Instructional Techniques
- Communication Skills
- Job Specific Training
This element of the course is designed around the syllabus set by the Driving Standards Agency and will involve your Trainer adopting the rôle of a pupil at various stages of development as a Learner Driver. The course is intensive and requires complete commitment to achieve the required standard.
Your progress will be reviewed at the end of each day of training and you will receive written feedback from your Trainer on the progress made and areas in which further work is required. At the end of this element of our Driving Instructor training course your Trainer will conduct a mock test and advise whether or not you are ready to take the Part 3 Test. If you have not achieved the required standard further training will be offered at a reduced rate.
Part 3 Training Package: £1,320.00 - Manchester based
ADDITIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING FOR EXTERNAL CANDIDATES
We also offer additional training for Part 3 candidates who have undertaken their training with other organisations and are approaching their final attempt at Part 3 and feel that the training they have received so far does not meet all their requirements. It is often useful in these circumstances to experience an alternative style of training to enable you to take a different perspective on your own delivery. Training is undertaken in 3 hour block sessions.
External Candidate Practical Training for Part 3: £40.00 per hour
